• Get Motor Oil: Grab your owner’s manual to make sure you have the right oil on hand. Different models use different oil formulations, but Cadillac models use synthetic oil for better performance.
• Prepare the Car: Raise your car with ramps, jack stands, or whatever you prefer for auto work. You may need to remove the plastic undertray that protects the engine. If you notice any leaks or damage before you get to work, consider scheduling a service appointment instead.
• Start Draining: Place a catch container, like a 5-gallon bucket or oil drain pan, underneath the drain plug. Loosen the drain plug counterclockwise with a wrench and hold it in place until you’re ready. Once you remove the plug, oil will pour out rapidly.
• Remove Old Filter: After the flow of oil has slowed to a trickle, look for the oil filter on the engine and loosen it. Oil will drip down, but once it stops, remove the filter and thin rubber o-ring gasket. Wipe everything down.
• Replace Filter and Plug: Replace the drain plug and tighten. Put a light coating of oil on the new oil filter gasket and tighten into place. Don’t overtighten. Put the undertray back in place if you have one.
• Refill Oil Reservoir: Lower the car back to the ground and open the hood. Remove the oil cap and fill your oil reservoir with a funnel to the manufacturer-recommended levels.
• Double Check Your Work: Wait a few minutes to allow the oil to settle, then use the dipstick to check your oil levels. Start the vehicle, let it idle, and scan under your car for any leaks.
