• If the mechanic is affiliated with any third parties (e.g. AAA), they are held to a specific standard of service. Any issues reported by customers are carefully investigated.
• Mechanics that hold the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification are required to pass one specialty test, have at least two years of service experience, and review their certification every five years. Earning this certification takes time and would be difficult to earn back if they are found to be dishonest in their practice.
• Make sure the mechanic services your make and model. Some mechanics will only specialize in repairs for one particular make of a vehicle (such as Toyota).
