Resolve to End Distracted Driving this Year

January 10th, 2014 by

According to the Department of Transportation (DOT), texting takes your eyes off the road for 4.6 seconds. At 55 MPH, that’s like driving the length of an entire football field blindfolded. Cactus Jack’s Auto finds this statistic alarming and is committed to making the roads safer.

“Distracted driving is an epidemic. While we’ve made progress in the past three years by raising awareness about this risky behavior, the simple fact is people are continuing to be killed and injured,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

The DOT released a “Blueprint for Ending Distracted Driving” that outlines a plan to:

  • Encourage the remaining 11 states without distracted driving laws to enact and enforce this critical legislation;
  • Challenge the auto industry to adopt new guidelines for technology to reduce the potential for distraction on devices built or brought into vehicles;
  • Partner with driver education professionals to incorporate new curriculum materials to educate novice drivers of driver distraction and its consequences; and
  • Provide all stakeholders with actions they can take that go beyond personal responsibility to helping end distracted driving nationwide.

You too can resolve to end distracted driving this year by helping to educate all Americans about the danger it poses. The following materials can be found at Distraction.gov.

  • Pledge Form: Give friends, family, and co-workers the alarming facts on distracted driving (found at distraction.gov) and help them commit to phone-free driving by signing the Pledge Form.
  • Parent-Teen Driving Contract: Get parents involved by encouraging them to sign a Parent-Teen Driving Contract, and don’t forget to agree on consequences.
  • Schools and Employers: Presentations, morning announcements, brochures, and even pre-written employer policies on distracted driving are all available to spread the awareness of this dangerous epidemic.
  • Smart-Phone Application: This app is designed to keep all drivers from being distracted. The Drive Safe Mode app will freeze your screen when the phone is moving, except for emergency numbers like 911.
