Registering a Car Bought in Another State

When you drive home to Mesa in a vehicle that was purchased across state lines, you’ll want to register your vehicle in your home state. You can do so easily enough, with your vehicle’s paperwork and a trip to the DMV. 

1. Ask the dealer for a bill of sale that provides the amount you paid for the vehicle. Then locate your local DMV.
2. Bring the following information with you to the DMV:
   1. Proof of residency
   2. Proof of insurance
   3. Tax Form RUT-50 Private Party Vehicle Tax Transaction
   4. Filled out odometer disclosure state for title transfer
   5. Completed application for vehicle transaction form
   6. Title of the vehicle signed by the previous owner
   7. Lienholders’ names and address
   8. Registration Fees
   9. Bill of sale

Tell the clerk at the local Surprise DMV that you purchased the vehicle out-of-state and want to register it at your address. 

1. The clerk will most likely return your bill of sale, but they will keep your KY title, and ask that you pay the appropriate difference in sales tax between the two states. 
2. Keep your eye on your mailbox for a new title.

Taxes and Fees on Out-of-State Cars

You’ll have to pay your local sales tax, the difference (if applicable), between your local sales tax and that of the other state, and a fee that your DMV charges.
